Baldrick Buckle

Born in 1972 Buckle grew up in Leeds, Yorkshire. As a youngster he was very creative and in 1990, completed a foundation year in art and design at Leeds College of Art and Design. At age 18 and expressing no desire to continue his art education, he headed to the US and spent 6 months chasing his music ambitions. Returning to the UK he played guitar in several rock bands while continuing to nurse his itchy feet. Buckle describes this part of his life as “…the point when I realised life’s possibilities, it is truly possible to shape your life into anything that you chose…and re-shape

In 1997 he co-founded the sand sculpting company ‘Sandaholics Anonymous’ in Amsterdam. Sandaholics were responsible for sculptures and sculpture events around the world, from Abu Dhabi to Texas. Buckle and Sandaholics found much success; including two 3rd place finishes at the World Championships in Canada and in ‘selling sand to the Arabs’, when they created the largest sand sculpture ever built in the Middle East.

In 2002, he sold his 50% share of the business to finance his study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam from where he graduated in Fine Art in 2007.

Currently based in both Amsterdam and London he continues to work on new projects and exhibitions worldwide.

Baldrick has carved at SandWorld for three years and this years sculpture is Sherlock Holmes. Even now, his piece from 2011, ‘D-Day Landing’ still get votes for the People’s Choice Award.
